A toddler says No

(Social media disclaimer. As I talk about Eukanuba, it is as an employee of P&G Pet Care. However, anything I say in praise of Eukanuba supports my personal belief that we make some great pet food now. No kidding, y’all. It’s totally true)

A question for you. So, what does a puppy experiencing the canine equivalent of the Terrible Twos do?
Whatever she wants, of course.
We’re going through a phase here at the Sword House. Where the word No happens a lot. Oh, but even that is in competition with the puppy raiser. Like a toddler, Miss Euka is becoming aware of her ability to make her own decisions. Events where the otherwise solid recall, Euka! Here! is met with a passive-aggressive response of I don’t know what that annoying buzzing sound is, but this blade of grass is worth a leisurely snort. And our Euka is a clever girl, right? If she finds me in a distracted state, she’ll ensure that I’ll repeat a command once or twice just to watch me do it.
This is a behavioral period where a puppy raiser needs to stay focused. If the pup’s rewarded with getting away with a delayed response to a command, by having me repeat it, this will be a beast to fix later. So Sit means Sit, little missy. I’m only gonna say it once, then me and you are gonna have a stare down. A raised eyebrow and head tilt from the puppy raiser, then Oh! You mean Sit! I know that one. This whole que pasa thing from the puppy isn’t fooling me. At five months old, she’s aware of proper behavior.
Yeah, we had one of those weeks.

Euka is with me during the workday; most days you’ll find us at the P&G office where Eukanuba is headquartered. And many times, the mighty Micron, an office veteran, is with us as well. So Euka’s been getting rather comfortable down here on the cube farm and makes herself at home. Which means she’s been taking on a rather casual attitude lately. You know what, Food Lady? she tells me. I feel like barking at Micron. He’s just laying there and it’s really annoying me. woof woof bawoof rawr . . .

Euka! Quiet! I say. Use your inside voice, girl. Ah, but this is a reminder that she’s just a pup and so we’ll be heading out to the play park at lunch where I’ll run the snot out of her for a while with a yellow tennis ball. With luck, we’ll meet another pup out there and they can detox together.

For an extra adventure this past week, we moved some folk around to different desks and we are enjoying a new cube neighbor, Gail.  Euka likes our new neighbor and finds her very interesting. She want to spend more time with Gail and is vexed to find herself ignored when the rest of us are deep in the throes of getting work done.

Euka is tethered to my desk, compliant with our office pet policy. A generous range, however, with two leashes connected to give her a wide area to command. Ah, but not wide enough. Euka can’t reach around the cubicle wall to see Gail. What’s a girl to do about this? Right, you know the answer.

Whatever she wants.

If you can’t go around the cube wall and you can’t go under, there’s nothing to do about it but try going over.  I see a flash of yellow head appear in my peripheral vision.  A moment of denial – no, that couldn’t be – but the sound of puppy claws trying to gain purchase on the cubicle panel on her way back down brings me back to reality.

Familiar with the term Prairie Dogging? It’s when your co-workers’ heads pop up collectively from all over the office to see what that sound was. It’s like a flippin’ gopher field in here. Witnesses always make these things better.

Holy sh. . . really, Euka? Dang it, ok now we’re gonna see how long you can hold a Down. No, no, right here. On the bed under my desk. Yep, that’ll do for a bit. Self-control, my love. It’ll do you good in life.

At five months old, we know this is an important time to start proofing the basics too. We’ll be hitting the public venues now.  Euka’s sporting her big girl cape while we visit the library and make quick stops at Starbucks, like we did yesterday.

We meet a family, a mom and her two young girls, just outside the library. Is she working? asks the mom.  She is, I said. But she’s here to learn proper greetings, too. Let’s have her sit and then she can be petted.

Sit, Euka. Holy cow, she does. Huh. Well, this is going quite well. This is Euka, I say. She’s a puppy in training to . . . Ack! Euka! Off!

Euka has had enough of this sitting nonsense and jumps up to lick one of the girls on the lips. Well, crapola. I’m sorely embarrassed, but not yet defeated.

Ok, I say to the girl as she uses the back of her hand to swipe away the puppy french kiss. You can help me train her, right? Let’s have Euka sit again. If she tries to jump up, just put your hands behind your back until she sits back down. She only gets petted if her butt is on the ground.

Ah, lovely. That goes much better.  We enter the library where they have no idea of my first name, but still ask about Puppy #1 Inga. And Puppies #2 and #3.  And things go well here on our first walk through. We greet adults, children and a babe in arms. A pretty Sit, no jumping and the occasional Shake. Good girl, Euka, I say each time. Well done.

I know these puppy terrible two’s won’t last. I just gotta stay strong. Keep focused and pay attention to reinforce the good stuff.

Because after this, we’re going into the puppy tween period.

She’s got legs (or Euka at Four Months Old)

(Social media disclaimer. As I talk about Eukanuba, it is as an employee of P&G Pet Care. However, anything I say in praise of Eukanuba supports my personal belief that we make some great pet food now. No kidding, y’all. It’s totally true)

She’s got legs and she know how to use ’em. –ZZ Top

Yeah, she posed herself with that leg and off the shoulder gaze.
You can’t buy this kind of sassiness.

It’s getting harder to remember this leggy girl as the fuzzy cotton ball puppy we brought into our home just a few weeks ago.

Can you believe it? CCI’s extraordinary E litter, born on September 14, will celebrate their four month birthday on Monday.

We met the E litter (Emma, Everett, Ella, Elmo, Euka II, Emily, Ethan and Eliza) as tiny hamsters on the Eukanuba Channel Livestream.  Immediately upon our first sighting of these puppies with their newborn eyes and ears closed, we watched in fascination as they nearly time lapsed into active eight-week-old puppies.  For those with a yearning to reminisce on that earlier time of innocence, the Livestream is still open with a video library of the Best of the E Litter recordings.

But holy cow, look at Euka now, will ya? At four months she’s showing promises of being a noggin-turning beauty, isn’t she?  The trifecta of brains, beauty and that sassafras attitude has us expecting big things of this girl.

When the Mighty Micron was this same age, we covered his early progress as a puppy in training for Canine Companions for Independence at A Fine Taste in Shoes.  And with a completely different personality, Yaxley’s Four for Four showed us how this yeller feller was doing at a mere sixteen weeks old.

So how’s the polar bear pup doing, you ask. Ah, a fine question that. I offer you Euka’s Four for Four.

Good Eats

That’s Euka on the dog bed. Eating one kibble. One.

We knew early on that Euka II would be assigned to us to raise for CCI. So we tuned in to the Livestream coverage with rapt attention on everything that was Euka.  From growth development (Look! She’s walking! Well, kind of.) to attitude (huh. She’s a little bossy, isn’t she?) I was ridiculously jazzed to have this online version of “being there”.  But observing her habits at the communal dinner bowl, I had a nagging bit of concern. Euka was just not showing herself as the voracious eater I’d experienced before with our CCI pups. I fretted over this. How does one train a puppy that is not food motivated?, I wondered. Not exactly driven to the point of hand wringing, knowing I had plenty of resources to hit with other experienced puppy raisers. But still, would this be a new challenge?

Ah, but it ain’t no use use in putting up your umbrella until it rains. Or something like that. From the first food bowl served at the popular Sword House eatery, Euka has shown a completely normal appetite level for a lab puppy. By normal, I mean she finishes her meal in time to check out how the other dogs are doing. You gonna finish that? she wants to know. Then the three go in a musical chairs rotation to lick each other’s bowls clean until all that’s left is a spit shine.  Yep, that’s our normal.

It’s a Sign

Honestly, Food Lady. What’s a girl gotta
do to get some attention around here?

While some folk admit a squee-worthy love of tiny puppies, they cringe at the thought of housebreaking the little critter. Especially during the winter months. Oh, but not me. Educating the proper use of nature-based toileting facilities is just a blip compared to all the other awesome stuff that comes with the puppy package.

However y’all, I will admit it to be a happy day when the yow-gotta-potty neurons start firing on their own accord. Ever the clever girl, Euka has connected the back door with bladder freedom and will hang out there until I take notice. A soft whine, she knows, will get faster action.

This week while working from home, Euka decided to kick things up a level. I will not be ignored, says Euka. She walked into the kitchen, picked up my snow boot by the steps, looked at me until she got some eye contact and then took the boot to the back door and dropped it.

Um. Wow.

That Adorable Head Tilt

The first puppy we raised for CCI, the lovely Inga, did the head tilt thing as a pup. Do you think she’ll keep this behavior? I asked other puppy raisers.  Sometimes they do, they said. And she did indeed. We’d say In-GA to see the noggin tilt on the second syllable. Cute, cute, cute.

yoo-KA [sigh]

In many ways Euka reminds us of Inga, both in appearance and personality. And oh my, that head tilt. [sigh] I love it.

Corporate Office Material

Proving herself to be made of the right stuff, Euka made her debut at Eukanuba’s corporate office last week.  A total success, that first visit, and I’m pretty proud of how she handled herself.  With held held high and tail wagging, Euka pranced about the place like the sizzlin’ hot stuff she is. Hello, she said to Everyone. Do you know who I am? She absolutely loved recess time in the outdoor dog park we have for employees’ pets (Ah, smells like beagle, Bernese and chihuahua out here. With a mushroomy nuance of Micron) and quickly positioned herself  into a play bow with a muddy tennis ball. Confidence abounds.
Euka 1.0 and Euka 2.0 pose for their first photo op.

Euka also had the honor of meeting the original Euka, the retired VP of Canine Communications for P&G Pet Care.  You may recall, our Euka pup will not be following in the pawprints of Euka as an officer of the company. Instead, we’ve got some big plans for her as she prepares herself for her upcoming Advanced Training to be a service dog.

More on the back story of namesakes and career destinations are on the dog blog post Introducing Euka II: She’s not a tuber.

Hey, I got this working hard thing down cold. When’s lunch?

Hey, so there ya go.  Four things about Euka II at four months old. You’re glad you asked, right? We’re moving along quite nicely here, IMHO and all.  And more Euka adventures yet to come! I can’t wait to see what’s she’s got for us next.

Character development

in a tree, says Everett. And I’m gonna pounce you.
(screen shot from the Eukanuba Puppy Channel)

Join me in wishing the Canine Companions for Independence E litter a very happy five week birthday, won’t you?  It seems these critters have grown in a flash, from little hamster-like buns into for-real puppies with personalities.  So five weeks old means just another three until the pups go out to their puppies raisers.

Eukanuba Puppy Channel voyeurs like myself no longer need to look at the collar color to identify the pups. Which one is throwing his head back in a yowl? Well, that would be the rather vocal Elmo. Hey! I got something important to tell you, says Elmo. Listen up, guys.

The pup army crawling for a sneak attack complete with an adorable puppy pounce onto a littermate? Yep, that’s Everett.

How ’bout the born leader of them all? Proving the birth order theory of first born having strong leadership skills, we have Emma.

The E’s were introduced into a new sensory environment this week and we can all watch as they discover their new digs, thanks to Eukanuba’s livestream. Here we all can watch as the furries have the room to spread out and show their true character. Oh, see the red slide in the photo? They’ll chug their stubby little legs up that thing and go down head first to the other side. Or butt first. Either way, it makes me say d’awww out loud. And under the slide is a blanket that all eight critters love to sleep on. At the same time. It looks like a tribble factory when they stuff themselves under there.

In the next screen shot, we see the E’s at dinner time. These pups get weighed by the breeder caretaker to ensure each little chubster is getting their fill and growing appropriately. The weights were shared this week by Eukanuba:

Emma (Red) – 7lbs 9 oz
Everett (Blue) – 7 lbs 10 oz
Ella (Purple) – 7 lbs 3 oz
Elmo (Neon Green) – 7 lbs
Euka II (Neon Pink) – 7 lbs
Ethan (Light Pink) – 7 lbs 6 oz
Emily (Brown) – 6 lbs
Eliza (Turquoise) – 7 lbs

So yeah, some healthy growing pups, right?  So I shouldn’t have any concern about Euka II and her seemingly delicate appetite. While her sibs are tucking into their kibble, she’s grazing. Grabbing a kibble here and there. Pick up a mouthful, then off to play with a coveted toy. Another visit to the kibble bar and she’s on the bed to enjoy the complex flavors.

Euka II takes over the bed during dinner hour. She’s noshing
upon a mouthful of kibble here.
(screen shot from the Eukanuba Puppy Channel)

What does this mean? I dunno, we can all speculate and guess and whatever, but really the chick is only five weeks old. But I’d like to say she has problem solving skills. Euka knows while everyone else is distracted, she now has the entire wealth of the playground to herself. Or maybe it’s simply that her littermates smell funny to her and that messes with her appetite.

Aw, but no matter. Just look at the weights again. Euka is right in line with her sibs. Well yeah, expect for Mt. Everett*, the chunky monkey of the litter.  Gotcha covered, Euka, says Everett. I’ll make sure you’re share of the kibble is eaten. Taking one for the team here.

But it’s important to be sure on these things, right? These are important puppies with that whole assistance dog destiny thing looming ahead. So we sent in an expert after dinnertime to get a second opinion.

She’s full, cap’n, says Ethan.

Introducing Euka II: She’s not a tuber

Kiss me, you fool.
Photo courtesy of Chris Kittredge Photography

(Social media disclaimer. As I talk about Eukanuba, it is as an employee of P&G Pet Care. However, anything I say in praise of Eukanuba supports my personal belief that we make some great pet food now. ‘Tis totally true.)

LOOK AT THIS FACE!, I’m saying way too loudly for cube farm environment. We have rules about such behavior, but we don’t call them that. It’s “open office etiquette” we say, like Emily Post works here at P&G or something. One doesn’t disturb one’s cubemates with loud exclamations while waving an 8 X 10 photo over one’s head.

Never being the kind of girl with an understanding of etiquette skills, let alone reasonable table manners, I’m compelled to bring everyone’s attention to a photo of Euka II that was just forwarded to me by email.

And just look at that face, why don’t ya? Here’s our next CCI pup in training at two weeks old. She’s looking directly into the camera with her newly opened eyes and just daring you not to kiss her square on the mouth.

This is Euka II, I explain to Everyone. She’s our next CCI office puppy.

What a cute baby, agrees Maria, my Spanish speaking cubemate. You know what we call a yuca, don’t you?

A yooka? I ask. With a long u sound? Isn’t that a southwestern flower or something. I thought that was yucca.

Photo courtesy of Chris Kittredge Photography

No, that’s different. A yuca is like, um, she patiently tries to explain to me. It’s a food important to South America. Kind of like a sweet potato. It grows underground, you know?

Ooh, a sweet potato, I think. Holy cow, that’s perfect! I look at the photo in my hands. Right, the stinkin’ adorable Euka is our little Sweet Tater. I’m seeing her roly poly puppy body with brown-sugar-cinnamon-on-top sweetness. Yummy enough to melt butter.

Actually, says another cubemate. It’s usually called a cassava. It’s really a tuber.

What’s that you say? A tuber? Oh, ugh. The thought balloon over my head audibly pops. Well, doesn’t that just suck the romance right out of it?   This puppy is not a tuber, I think.  Naw, I’m sticking with the Sweet Tater image.

So this precious little package of puppy goodness is Euka II, the fifth born of the Eukanuba sponsored E litter for Canine Companions for Independence. She is, of course, taking her noble moniker from the Eukanuba brand. But there’s more to it than just that.

Euka II is also the namesake of Euka, our recently retired VP of Canine Communications at P&G Pet Care.  More about Euka can be found at this link. But she was kind of a big deal around P&G. From the news release announcing her retirement after nine years of loyal service to the company . . .

About Euka

Since joining the team in the summer of 2003, she’s been the official greeter of office visitors, represented IAMS and Eukanuba at corporate events and industry activities, supervised numerous shelter makeovers and visited school children to help educate them about the importance of animals and how best to take care of them. In 2004, her celebrity really took off when she became a national “cover dog” by appearing on Fortune Magazine with P&G CEO at the time, A.G. Lafley.

To learn more about and follow the happenings of Griffin, P&G Pet Care’s new V.P. of Canine Communications, visit Facebook.com/IAMS or Facebook.com/Eukanuba.

It’s an honor, it would seem, to be carrying on the name of Euka here at P&G. And I’m a little crazy jazzed that this little celeb-to-be will be my charge soon.

We do know that Euka II won’t be stepping into Euka’s paw prints in the executive suite. Her replacement, the esteemed Pawl Griffin, has taken on the role of VP of Canine Communications. Instead our Euka II will be hanging with me in Pet Care R&D to learn about her career as a service-pup-in-training.

I shall call him Squishy and he will be mine
and he will be my Squishy.

Three weeks down, five to go, until I can schmoosh my face in hers and get a good whiff of that wonderful puppy smell. Or start her training.  Sure, we’ll do that too.

Until that magical time, I’ll be cyber stalking the E litter on the Eukanuba Puppy Channel. Have you looked at this in the last couple of days?  The whelping area has been expanded to include a playground for the pups. They’ve found their legs and are learning to play with each other.

You know, I do declare myself with having earned a Master level at multi-tasking. Well heck, what mom isn’t an expert at performing multiple feats? But a warning to even the best of us. I tried running this Livestream and preparing dinner in the evening a couple of times and it kinda ends badly.  If you consider pizza delivery as Plan B as a bad thing.

So forewarned is four-legged. Or something like that.

There’s our lil tater in the right in the center of the action.  (screen shot from the Eukanuba Puppy Channel.)
